A briefing on the latest legal and political developments regarding the Calhoun and Lee monuments will be provided by the AHA. Our featured speakers, both authors and members of the board of the American Heritage Association, will transport you to a distant battlefield in Somalia and unearth the lost history of Castle Pinckney right here in Charleston Harbor. A lunch buffet will be provided by Hall's and includes angus meatloaf, herb roasted chicken, baby arugula salad, three bean minestrone, rosemary roasted potatoes, grilled seasonal vegetables and cinnamon roll bread pudding.

Why: In June of 2020, former Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg led the effort to remove the 130+ year old monument to U.S. Vice-President John C. Calhoun, arguably the grandest monument in all of South Carolina. This action directly violated the charitable trust agreement the city entered into with the Ladies Calhoun Monument Association when it accepted the responsibility of maintaining and protecting the monument. The terms of the agreement said the city must care for the monument as a "priceless treasure". The following year, Tecklenburg, without seeking council approval, removed the Robert E. Lee Memorial on Upper King Street, which according to a statement by SC Attorney General Alan Wilson was a violation of state law. The AHA is funding the pending lawsuit against the City of Charleston for the removal of the Calhoun monument and has refiled the lawsuit regarding the Lee Memorial with the Charleston Chapter 4 of the UDC as the plaintiffs. Both lawsuits seek to put the monuments back up. Funds raised by this event will go towards AHA's efforts to re-erect these historic monuments as well as our legislative agenda in Columbia to strengthen statewide monument protection laws. South Carolina's history shall not fall to Marxism. The tide shall turn and it shall start in CHARLESTON!
